Kendal is not actually in the Lake Dist National Park, although it is a nice town, it is not as well served for pubs/restaurants as Keswick, and lacks some of the atmosphere of the villages within the park. Keswick would be a better choice in my opinion. Definitely Keswick.

Is Lake Windermere OK to swim in : In my educated opinion, yes it is. For the past 18 years, I have swam or paddled (canoe/kayak) in Windermere almost every week throughout the entire year. I have never witnessed a fish kill caused by pollution and I am delighted to see a wide variety of seasonal and local wildlife.
