Where did the British Oi come from?
In 1980, writing in Sounds magazine, rock journalist Garry Bushell labelled the movement Oi!, taking the name from the garbled "Oi!" that Stinky Turner of Cockney Rejects used to introduce the band's songs. The word is a British expression meaning hey or hey there!Oi! is a type of punk rock that was started in the United Kingdom in the late 1970s. The people that started it wanted to connect punk with a working class street-level following. Oi! is a mixing of the styles of early punk bands, such as The Clash, Sex Pistols and the Ramones.Thirty years after Bushell – then a writer for the music paper Sounds, as well as the Rejects' manager – coined the term "Oi!" to describe a third generation of punk-inspired working-class bands playing "harder music on every level, guitar driven, terrace choruses", it remains largely reviled or ignored in Britain.

Did the British invent punk : The punk rock subculture began in the United States in the early 1970s as both a continuation and a reaction to the 1960s countercultural movements. Although punk music was largely an American invention, punk style and attitude was very much a product of British youth culture.

Was punk American or British

punk, aggressive form of rock music that coalesced into an international (though predominantly Anglo-American) movement in 1975–80.

Why did British punk start : Especially in early British punk, a central goal was to outrage and shock the mainstream. The Sex Pistols' "Anarchy in the U.K." and "God Save the Queen" openly disparaged the British political system and social mores.

In the UK, however, punk was born from SEX (the shop established by Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood on London's Kings Road) and disseminated first by Sex Pistols and then by the countless groups they inspired.

Did punk come from England

The Beginnings

It's been argued that punk existed in New York before it hit London, with groups like the Ramones and Patti Smith playing venues like CBGB's in the Bowery. In London, though, it was far more political, a cry against the established system of government, from groups like The Sex Pistols and the Clash. In the UK, however, punk was born from SEX (the shop established by Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood on London's Kings Road) and disseminated first by Sex Pistols and then by the countless groups they inspired.Text by Matthew Worley, Cover Photo by Gavin Watson. British punk emerged in 1976, coalescing around the Sex Pistols and spreading – virus-like – into the suburbs, provinces and cities of the UK.

the Sex Pistols

British punk's emergence as a recognised cultural form and musical genre is often linked to the Sex Pistols. The band's records, such as 'Anarchy in the UK' (1976) and 'God Save the Queen' (1977), provoked controversy and helped distinguish punk as an overtly politicised youth culture.
