Both places would be interesting to walk around in the evening. Ambleside is the more central of the two if you want to see the main places but I quite like Keswick and the Derwentwater area. Many B&Bs in Ambleside are on main routes so staying on the edge of Ambleside as Bailey suggests could be a good suggestion.
Why is Keswick so popular : Keswick has an abundance of interesting heritage sites to visit such as Castlerigg Stone Circle, the Bowder Stone, Honister slate mine and the Derwent Pencil Museum which demonstrates why Keswick was the world-centre of pencil manufacturing!

Which is better, Yorkshire Dales or Lake District
The towns are charming and the scenery is very diverse, with lots of hiking available. And of course, there is so much history there. But really you can't go wrong with either. One thing to keep in mind is that the Lake District will probably be more crowded than the Dales, depending on when you go.
Windermere
Explore Windermere and Ambleside
Enjoy the stunning mountain views around England's largest lake, Windermere and the bustling town of Ambleside. Visit things to do around Windermere. Windermere and the surrounding area is arguably the most famous and popular area in the Lake District.Kendal is not actually in the Lake Dist National Park, although it is a nice town, it is not as well served for pubs/restaurants as Keswick, and lacks some of the atmosphere of the villages within the park. Keswick would be a better choice in my opinion. Definitely Keswick.
What is the least visited part of the Lake District : Haweswater and Kentmere
Known as the Eastern Fells, these areas are along the eastern edge of the Lake District and are less common for tourists to visit. Haweswater is tricky to reach with a single road leading in and out so cars are needed to get there and the best views are found on foot.
