Now world-famous thanks to its starring role as Downton Abbey, Highclere Castle has become one of England's most visited destinations.While the exterior and more palatial areas of Blenheim are authentic (other locations include Greenwich Naval College and Wilton Hall, a grand country house in Salisbury), the private rooms of the series' sovereignties were created on soundstages near London.An eighteenth century Palladian mansion located in Berkshire, Basildon Park stands in for the Crawley family's London residence, Grantham House, in Downton Abbey. Basildon Park featured in the series five finale, as well as the special London episode on Christmas Day in 2013.
That said, as the Royal Family's official residence since 1837, it's perhaps understandable that the show couldn't film inside. Instead, Lancaster House stood in for most of the scenes set in the palace.
